Based on Trade Statistics of Japan, the imports of secondary aluminum lumps in Japan were 77,279 tonne, down by 17.5% compared with what in the previous month, and the average import unit price was JPY216/kg. It's JPY3/kg cheaper compared with the previous month. Of the number, the imports of Chinese secondary aluminum lumps which most are used as automotive die-casting alloy ADC12 totaled 20,833 tonne, down by 29% compared with the previous month. It was a lower level since March. It's considered that the imports from China became fairly expensive compared to Japanese ADC12 price, as a result, the imports fell.

The imports of Russian secondary aluminum lumps (most are base metal specs AK5M2) totaled 21,917 tonne, down by 6.3%, not falling that much compared with the previous month. Also for the import quantity in the first half (January~June), the imports of Russian secondary aluminum lumps totaled 111,265 tonne in 2013 while 107,552 tonne in 2012, up by 3.4% compared with the previous year.

On the other hand, the import quantity of Chinese secondary aluminum lumps in the first half with ADC12 as the main, totaled 140,440 tonne this year while 210,308 tonne in 2012, down by 33% compared with the previous year.

That increase in domestic aluminum alloy production due to the rectifying yen's appreciation of exchange (the progressing low yen) reduced the imports of Chinese secondary aluminum lumps, but on the other hand, the imports from Russia were not falling because the imports of Russian secondary lumps (AK5M2) as the secondary aluminum alloymaking raw materials are maintained mainly by hot aluminum makers (Honda Trading, Toyoda Tsusho, Hoei Metal, Taiki Aluminum), but rather because at Japan side, speculative importers also increased, so the imports of Russian secondary aluminum lumps in the first half increased.
